AI Overviews Took the Click. Here Is What Still Works
Google increasingly answers the question itself, right on the results page. Here is exactly how that happens, and why the searches that bring you a customer still end in a click, a call or a booking.
Google's AI Overviews answer most general questions on the page itself, so clicks to how-to and what-is content have genuinely dropped.
Searches with local or buying intent, near me, open now, book, still send a customer to a call, a booking or a visit, because the overview cannot finish that transaction itself.
Being named as a source inside an AI Overview is a trust signal even without a click, and it depends on the same things that always mattered: a clear site and an accurate Google Business Profile.
Nobody can pay or trick their way into an AI Overview. It pulls from the sources already ranking well and already trusted, so the fundamentals still decide who gets named.
When someone searches for what you do, Google increasingly answers the question itself, in a short written summary at the top of the page called an AI Overview, and a large share of those searches now end without a single click to any website. That change is real, but it mostly empties out the general, what-is and how-do-I kind of search. The searches that actually bring you a customer, near me, open now, book a table, are built differently, and most of them still end in a click, a call or a booking.
How a search turns into an AI Overview
The mechanism is simple once you see it. Google reads the question, decides whether it looks informational, general knowledge, a definition, a how-to, and if it does, it pulls together the pages already ranking well for that query and writes a short answer from them. That answer sits above the normal list of results, with a small handful of linked sources beside it. Nothing about this involves buying anything or flipping a setting: the overview is generated from whichever pages Google already trusted enough to rank, then compressed into a few sentences.
Why does the answer skip the click entirely?
Because for a lot of questions, the short answer is the whole answer. If someone asks what a service costs on average or how a process works, three sentences on the results page settles it, and there is nothing left to visit a website for. That is not Google being hostile to small businesses; it is the natural result of a question with a short, factual answer.
8%
of searches that trigger an AI Overview still lead to a click on a traditional result, against 15% when no overview appears, based on real browsing data from nearly 69,000 Google searches.

What still gets a click, a call or a booking
Local and buying searches work through a different part of the mechanism. Near me, open now, best [what you do] in [your town], book a table, these are not asking for general knowledge; they are asking to be connected to an actual, nearby business right now. Google answers that kind with the Maps pack and local results, your name, address, hours, phone number and reviews, sitting front and centre, exactly the details that turn a search into a phone call or a walk-in rather than a satisfied scroll past. Getting that listing right is its own mechanism worth understanding on its own; we cover it in Google Business Profile for Small Business.
"[service] near me" and "open now": local intent, answered by Maps and the local pack
"best [what you do] in [town]": comparison intent, still a click or a call away
"book", "price for", "appointment": buying intent, aimed straight at a business, not an encyclopedia entry
"what is", "how does", "why does": informational intent, exactly what an AI Overview answers on the spot
45%
of consumers now use an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Gemini to find a local business, up from just 6% a year earlier. People are not skipping local businesses; they are asking a different assistant to find one.

So is being mentioned in the answer worth anything?
Even without a click, being named as a source beside an AI Overview is not nothing. It puts your business in front of someone at the exact moment they are deciding, and it works the same way trust has always worked online: the systems that write these answers pull from pages and profiles that already look clear, accurate and consistent across the web. That is a longer playbook than one post can hold; we walk through it fully in Getting Found When AI Answers First.
An honest note
There is no setting that guarantees a mention and no fee that buys one. What moves the needle is unglamorous: answer real questions clearly on your own site, keep your Google Business Profile complete and current, and earn honest reviews. Anyone promising a shortcut around that is guessing.
The mechanism, start to finish
1
Someone types or speaks a question
A general question, or a local one looking for an actual business nearby, right now.
2
Google sorts the intent
Informational questions get routed toward a written summary. Local and buying questions get routed toward Maps, the local pack and business listings.
3
The system builds its answer from what already ranks
An AI Overview is written from pages already trusted enough to rank well; a local result is built from your Google Business Profile, reviews and site.
4
The overview may name you, without a click
If your content or profile fed the answer, you can appear as a cited source. That is an impression and a trust signal, not a visit.
5
The actual click, call or booking happens outside the summary
On your Google Business Profile, on the Maps listing, or on your own site once someone decides you are the right business to contact.
How Kodable helps
We build sites that are fast and clearly structured, and easy for both a customer and an AI system to read, alongside a Google Business Profile set up the way this mechanism actually rewards. No promises about guaranteed placement, because nobody can make that promise honestly, just a site and a listing built for how people, and the systems answering for them, search today.

Does an AI Overview mention count as a visit to my website?
No. Being named as a source is an impression, seen next to the answer, not a click recorded in your analytics. It can still build trust and recognition, but it will not show up as traffic.
Can I pay to appear in an AI Overview?
No, there is no ad product for it. The overview is generated from pages and profiles that already rank and already look trustworthy, so the way in is the same work that has always helped: a clear site, real answers and an accurate Google Business Profile.
Do I still need a website if people ask AI tools for recommendations?
Yes. Whatever assistant someone asks, ChatGPT, Gemini or Google itself, it is reading your website, your Google Business Profile and your reviews to build the answer. Without a real site there is nothing accurate for it to summarize or recommend.
How do I tell if AI Overviews are actually affecting my business?
Compare impressions to clicks in Google Search Console for your informational pages: a growing gap usually means an overview is answering the question before anyone reaches you. Then check your local, buying-intent searches separately; those usually hold up far better.

The Kodable team
A small studio using AI to help local businesses get found, get booked, and win back their week.
Google increasingly writes the answer at the top of the page, and fewer people click through. Here is what actually changed for a local business, and the honest playbook for getting found when AI answers first.
For most local businesses the Google listing gets more visits than the website. It is also the thing most owners set up once and never touch again. Here is what to fill in, what to keep doing, and what to leave alone.
Every enquiry you miss after hours is a customer someone else answered. Here is what an AI agent really does for a small business, in plain English, and what it will never do for you.
Every week without this is a booking someone else is getting.
When a customer searches nearby and books the competitor with a faster site and instant replies, it isn't because they were better. It's because they were easier to find and faster to answer. That's fixable, and it starts with a 15-minute chat that costs nothing.
